Chemical Peel Treatment Know About Them
Chemical peels involve applying an acid-based formula to the skin to keep it soft, smooth, and supple. Chemical peels can be used on most areas of the body, but the most common use is to improve the appearance of the skin on the face or on the backs of the hands.
A chemical solution is applied to the surface of the skin to carefully remove the outer layers. The amount of skin removed will depend on the type of chemical used, the strength of the product, and how long it is left on the skin.
The 3 basic types of chemical peels are:
- Superficial Peel
A mild acid is used to penetrate only the top layer of the skin. It is used to treat slight skin discoloration and rough skin. A superficial peel is also called a lunchtime peel.
- Medium Peel
The middle layers of the skin are exfoliated using acids like glycolic acid. It can be used to treat age spots, wrinkles, fine lines, freckles, and skin discoloration.
- Deep Peel
An acid like trichloroacetic acid is used to deeply penetrate the middle layers of the skin. Deep peels can have a great impact on the skin. Scars, freckles, and age spots can be treated with deep peels.
How Do Chemical Peels Work?
Chemical peels contain acids that dissolve and lift skin cells.
Once the product is applied to your skin, the acid molecules will get underneath the top layer of skin cells and separate them from your skin. This process removes dead and old skin cells and causes a new layer of skin cells to be exposed.
Exposing a new layer of skin cells causes the cells to become more active. They will produce new skin cells, and collagen production will increase. These new cells will also retain moisture and absorb skincare products more effectively.
What Can Chemical Peels Treat?
Chemical peels can treat a wide range of skin complaints by gently peeling off the old, damaged skin and making way for new healthy skin to shine through. Chemical peels can help with:
- Dull, ageing skin
- Sun damage
- Acne and oily skin
- Acne scars
- Melasma and pigmentation
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Sun/age spots and freckles
- Uneven skin, enlarged pores and blackheads
Skin Bliss team of experienced medical skin experts, led by Consultant Dermatologists, will advise on which type of chemical peel would benefit you most, as well as how many peels you would require, which is dependent upon the condition you are being treated for.
Chemical peels can be classified as either superficial peels or medium depth peels depending on the chemical solution applied to the skin surface. They both remove the outer layers of the skin but do so to variable depths.
Benefits
Chemical peels are an effective and long-lasting solution to skin imperfections. Peels are formulated in the varying strengths outlined above to counteract the following skin conditions:
- Fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth
- Wrinkles caused by sun damage and aging
- Improve the appearance of mild scars
- Treat certain types of acne
- Reduce age spots, freckles, and dark patches (melasma) due to pregnancy or taking birth control pills
- Treat hyperpigmentation due to sun damage
- Improve the overall appearance and texture of the skin
What To Expect Before, During And After A Chemical Peel?
Before
- Chemical peels are usually ideal for people with fair skin. Those with dark skin are likely to have an uneven skin tone after the treatment.
- Avoid waxing, scrubbing, bleaching and massages a week before the procedure and stop using retinol/retinoids for 48 hours prior.
During
- Your doctor will clean your face and cover your eyes and hair.
- For a medium peel, your doctor may put you on a sedative. For deep peel, you will be given local anesthesia. There is no need for painkillers for a light peel.
- A peeling solution is applied to the area for a set amount of time followed by a neutralizing solution.
- You may experience a burning sensation for 5-10 minutes while the procedure is on. Ice compress and pain medications are prescribed to ease your pain.
After
- After a chemical peel, your skin is more prone to sun damage. It is crucial to protect your skin with a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or above. Limit your exposure to the sun when the sun’s rays are at their strongest.
- After the treatment, you may notice redness and scaling for about 3-7 days.
What can I expect after the chemical peel procedure?
The recovery period depends on the type of chemical peel done:
After a superficial or light chemical peel, you may experience some redness, stinging, skin flaking, and irritation, which subsides in 1-2 days. One week post-treatment, you can start to notice an improvement in the condition and texture of your skin. With repeated treatments, these positive changes improve further.
The redness and flaking of skin continue for a longer duration, up to 2 weeks following deeper chemical peels.
When Will I See Results?
You should see an immediate brightening because that first layer of dull and dead skin cells will be sloughed away. The real results come a few weeks later as collagen builds up the deeper layers of skin. That underlying strength will come through and optimal results should be seen by the four-week mark. Clients can expect to see:
- Improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Lightening of age spots and sun damage
- Improvement in the appearance of acne scars
- An evening of skin tone and texture
- Brightening of complexion
- Tightening of minor skin laxity
